Have you ever had one of those rare moments where your body, mind, and emotions all exhale at the same time?
That’s called coherence.
It happens when your heart, brain, and nervous system all fall into sync. Your heart rhythm becomes smooth and ordered, your breathing gets steady, your mind feels calm, and your body eases into alignment.
While coherence can actually be measured, you don’t need a device to know when you’re there — you feel it. A sense of clarity, peace, and resilience washes over you.
That desire for coherence is something I’ve carried with me since I first studied it with the HeartMath Institute back in 2019. At the time, I didn’t realize it would be the doorway into an entirely new way of seeing the body, one that eventually led me to quantum biology, circadian rhythm, and all the work I do now.
But the truth is, coherence isn’t just a state you drop into when you meditate or do breathework.
It can actually be a way of life.
Since my discovery of the possibility of coherence, I’ve been on a bit of a quest. For inner peace, to find joy, and today, to be at ease with the changes of midlife.
Coherence has helped me to resist resistance. To ride the current of who I am becoming, even when it feels… uncomfortable.
At 55 years young, I’m solidly in midlife. And while it comes with some challenges —shifting hormones, a new body, a changing POV — I don’t resist it. For one, resisting it would not allow for coherence. But also because allowing space to get to know this new version of myself has been a gift.
So what does coherence look like for me, in practice?
On the outside:
– Living in alignment with how my body and nature are designed to work, even if it means letting go of convenience or old habits
– Eating in ways that match my needs and energy, not someone else’s rules or “science”
– Honoring rest as much as movement, and joy as much as productivity
On the inside:
– My heart, mind, and body aligning with the truth of who I am
– My nervous system learning to entrain with my higher self, not my scared child-like parts
– Finding clarity and calm in moments that used to leave me anxious or overwhelmed
What coherence has taught me is when our inner world matches our outer world, we feel grounded, peaceful, and at home in ourselves.
And I think that’s exactly what midlife is inviting us into.
Midlife has a way of stripping away what no longer fits and asking us to live more honestly.
For me, coherence is both the compass and the practice. It’s a reminder that when I align with rhythm, with nature, and with myself, life feels more in flow. It doesn’t mean things are always easy, but it does mean I meet life’s obstacles with more steadiness and grace. And that’s a gift at any age!
